Star looked over her stall, her ears pricked and her senses alert. She whinnied deeply, calling to Elizabeth. She pawed at the ground, nickering and snorting. She circled her stall a few times, distressed and alone. Elizabeth had left to do who-knows-what, and now here Star was, all alone and not very happy. She nickered and neighed, trying to reach Elizabeth's ears, but no one came. Star hung her head low and lethargically ate her hay.
Elizabeth rounded the corner, back from her errand. She looked into Star's stall, and called to her softly, "Star, whats the matter girl?" She noticed how downcast the mare looked. As soon as Elizabeth spoke, the mare returned to her energetic self. Uh oh! Elizabeth thought. She's dependant on my prescence! This was never good, especially for a racehorse. They needed to be able to bond with other riders and feel safe and fine without their owner being present. Elizabeth knew she had to work this out, or the filly would only be a pet, and not be able to stand to her won potential. What she needed was another rider that could share the bond and possibly even help Star to become dependent on only herself. Nonetheless, Elizabeth stroked Star's head, speaking softly to her and giving her reassuring pats. "What am I going to do with you?" she said jokingly.
